In a few short weeks, nature will creep back over the areas we excavated and you'll never know we were there.

While we did locate another area of the previous excavations, once again we were not successful in discovering the foundations. After six years of excavating at the Joseph Howland site, we have decided to take a hiatus from digging in order to focus on the data and artifacts we have collected since 2005. Through a careful look at the maps we have made and by studying the artifact distributions throughout the site, we hope to have a clearer overall picture. We also hope to have a better idea of where those cellars may be. In time, we may return to "the dig" again, but for now we are going to say farewell to the excavations at Rocky Nook.

These seasons at Rocky Nook would not have been such a pleasant experience without all our wonderful volunteers. Thank you to this year's team: Pam, Alex, Connor, Carolyn, Betty, Dick, Melody, Randy, Tatiana, Tyler, Evan, Kristin, Elizabeth, Michael Go., Joann, Ellen, Jane, Martha, Vicki, Bill, Sarah, Mike, Jon, Eldon, Malka, Tracey, Jan, Jim, Michael Gi., and, of course, Ray.

A huge thank you goes out to the two guys that never missed a season and always beat the rest of us to the site in the morning, Jonathan and Richard!

Of course none of this would have been possible without the amazing archaeologists who volunteered a week of their vacation to lead the excavations. We cannot thank them enough for their patience and helpfulness with all of us over the years. Thank you so much, Dave, Beth, Jesse, and Anna.

Most of all, we thank Derek for his incredible dedication and leadership of the Pilgrim John Howland Society's excavations at Rocky Nook for the past thirteen years. We are so blessed to have had him heading the project. Thank you, Derek!

For those of us who are descendants of John Howland, the opportunity to excavate his and his son's properties at Rocky Nook has been an amazing experience. It is a rare thing to pull something out of the ground and know that the last time it was held, it was in the hand of one's ancestor nearly 400 years ago. That experience personalizes the story of the Mayflower pilgrims and this county's beginnings far more than any reenactment or museum could. Those of us who have spent one week or many digging at Rocky Nook have had the experience of a lifetime.

Now, this isn't the end of archaeology at the Pilgrim John Howland Society. There are artifacts needing conservation and everything we have done over the last six years will go through intense study. Archaeology isn't just digging square holes to find treasures. It also involves countless hours in the lab, analyzing all that we have uncovered. After six years, we have a lot to analyze. As we learned on Monday, the conservation process can uncover new things about the artifacts too. Perhaps, after a few years of studying the data we can return to learn even more from the Joseph Howland site. Of course, the site will continue to be maintained and surveyed regularly.

Thank you for following this year's excavation. If you want to learn more about the archaeology at Rocky Nook, please visit the Jabez Howland House in downtown Plymouth, MA to see many of the artifacts from the previous excavations. In time, artifacts from our excavation will be added to the exhibits. In the meantime, check back occasionally for updates.

2011 Day 5: Nearing the End

Today, we opened some more units and dug deeper in others with the hope of distinguishing the areas that were previously excavated in 1959/69 from areas that were not. The bulks at the Joseph Howland site are areas of dark soil surrounded by areas of artifact free, light colored soil. By finding these bulks we are able to align our excavation with previous excavations. This is very encouraging.

Of course, no excavation is complete without a few cool artifacts here's a selection of what we found today:

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; So, we untilize a technique called "shovel scraping." Instead of digging straight down, we still dig as level as possible...with shovels instead of trowels. It requires special care and some practice to get it right, but under a trained hand it allows us to excavate more quickly.

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; We had a large crew of 20 volunteers who opened 7 5x5ft excavation units. This year, as in previous seasons, we are in search of the foundations of the the Joseph Howland homestead. Most of the excavation units are located in an area where we believe one of the foundations may be. We are also searching for evidence of the previous excavations of 1959 and 1969. Therefore we are not only looking for definite foundations but also for areas of sterile, previously excavated soil.

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; Of course an important part of excavating is the screening process. Soil from the units is put into a bucket and taken to one of the screens where it is sifted in order to find smaller artifacts like nails, cermanic sherds, and glass fragments.

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; We determine that we have reached a new level when there is a noticable color or consistency change in the soil. The only way to notice these levels is if we dig slowly with trowels and keep the unit as even as possible. Once a new layer is reached, the unit is cleaned of any loose soil and large roots and looks like this:

Then, measurements of the depth and composition of the soil are recorded. If necessary, a plan or map will be drawn of the unit. It is imperative that we take all these detailed notes so we will have a complete understanding of the site. Also, these notes are invaluable for research because once something has been excavated, it can never be excavated again. There are no re-do's in archaeology.

Sometimes, there will be what we call a "feature" in the unit. A feature can be a number of things such as a ring of stones, a foundation, a trash pit, a hearth, or even a circular section of soil that is darker in color than the soil in the rest of the unit. When that type of feature is discovered, it will often be excavated seperately from the rest of the unit in order to determine what it is. These circles of different colored soil usually indicate a hole or depression. These holes could be evidence of a post hole, a looter's pit, or even an animal burrow. Any of these things could be present on the Joseph Howland site.

Melody investigates a feature in her unit that was close to the surface. This may have been a looter's pit.
Looting has been an issue on the Howland property over the years.

Tomorrow we will continue to take the 7 units down to the next levels. However, one unit gave us a glimpse of what to expect. In this case, a large tree stump needed to be removed and the hole which it left was excavated. It seems that two large rocks may be in the next level. Only more time will tell what that may indicate.

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LhWox8sfHeI/Tkr8I4NOG5I/AAAAAAAABZU/p9a6wKOWb2k/s1600/tree.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; It was the first time in many, many years that we lost a day due to rain. So far this is our progress:

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mCjwaUSD0T4/TkmisQPxYzI/AAAAAAAABYc/9wmsoPYypAM/s1600/photo7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Several items from the 1939 and 1959 excavations were removed from the display case on the second floor of the Jabez Howland House to be treated after years of continuous display. Some of these items include a fish hook, a key, a spur, and an ox shoe. Here are some pictures of other items that went through the conservation process and are now back on display in the Howland House.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; We are still in search of the elusive building foundations, but we believe that we will locate them this year. Of course, since we've excavated everything else, the odds are with us. Just like every other year, a few of us came out on Sunday to do any needed clearing and to plot in the new units. This year, it took a little longer than usual since our datum (a standard position or level that measurements are taken from) was MIA for most of the morning. Many of us spent most of the morning on our hands and knees poking around in the thick grass looking for something the size of a nail head.

Thankfully it turned up, just when we were ready to give up. Using this datum and notes from previous years we determined where we will be digging this season.

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NHGx5B0C8LA/TkhA28IXO1I/AAAAAAAABYM/UNWCa7uDsDg/s1600/photo5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; They are calling for 100% chance of rain with an expectation of 1 to 2 inches. More than likely, we won't be digging, but at least the site is ready to go for Tuesday. Of course, we had to take a look at the John Howland homestead across the street near the large monument. Our last season at that site was in 2004, and as you can see it didn't take long for nature to take over again. One would never know there was a site there.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The dates for the excavation this year are August 16-20th. We will continue to investigate the large area that was opened last year with the hopes of connecting our work with the excavations in the 1960s.

As of now, the 2010 season will be our last year at Rocky Nook.

Archaeology is a destructive science and once we dig things up, we can never put them back the way they were. It is extremely important to leave areas of a site untouched so archaeologists will be able to continue research using new techniques or technology in the future. Our goal for Rocky Nook is save parts of it for future Howland descendents to investigate. They will no doubt learn new things about the life of John Howland and his family at the Rocky Nook Homestead that we would not be able to discern at this time.

We've uncovered hundreds of artifacts that require storage and conservation. They provide data about this period and will be made accessible for research. Also, several of these items will eventually be on display at the Jabez Howland House in Plymouth. The work performed over the last decade at Rocky Nook by archaeologists and volunteers has been invaluable not only for understanding the day to day life of the Howland family but also for understanding the lives of the early colonists on the coast of Massachusetts.

We are looking forward to what this year holds and for reuniting with all those that have participated in this project through the years. We are excited to have some new faces this year too! As always, daily updates on our progress will be posted on the blog during the project week.

August 20: Dig Day 4

Emily and Jan sifting.

The large open area being cleaned.

The dark stain visible in this picture could be an indication of the previous excavation or a cellar foundation.

Once again we did not have any vandalism at the site today. Plus, the temperatures were much cooler than the rest of the week. We were very thankful on both points. We had one new volunteer join us today, Emily an intern from Plimoth Plantation, and it was a pleasure to have another zealous worker to help us finish. We opened up three more squares, one to the northwest of the main grid and two which extended the large open area further. None of them turned up anything significant with respect to artifacts, but the two added to the grid were able to show us more about what is going on. Unfortunately, it isn't showing us enough. There are many possibilities of what we are seeing. One could be that we are in an area that Deetz never dug, another could be that we are on a cellar and haven't gone deep enough to see the rest of the stone, or that this is indeed a section of his grid that he did not dig very deeply. Unfortunately, due to the make-up of the soil and our limited time here, we probably cannot make a conclusion about what we are seeing. That means, of course, we will be coming back next year! Tomorrow is backfill day, but maybe a light will turn on before we close up for the year.

August 19: Dig Day 3

Richard and Beth hard at work.

Jonathan working on his third unit.

Good evening everyone. I'm pleased to report that we did not have any vandalism last night! Between the Kingston Police and Ray Sr. (a.k.a, The Admiral) we may have scared them off. Our spirits were much higher this morning because of that.

So, we were able to get to work right away. Today we opened 5 more units, thus opening the largest continuous area ever. We couldn't have pulled this off if it weren't for the help of all the volunteers. We are still in search of the cellars and the Deetz excavation area. Even though we have this huge area open, nothing is looking definitive yet. However, something always turns up on the last day. One highlight of the day was the discovery of a Westerwald rim and body sherd. It showed up just as we were getting ready to call it a day. It was also great to see Jan again after a couple years. She was definitely missed. We've got a great crew this year. Hopefully tomorrow, on the last day of digging for this year, we will find what we're looking for.

<img width='1' height='1' Today's Damage

So once again, the day dawned with the discovery of vandalism at the Joseph site! Today's damage was more severe than yesterday. They kicked holes in our screens, stole our rakes, yanked a rock out of one of the test units, pulled up all our string, and stomped around on Ray and Marcia's midden (thankfully, nothing significant was broken). The police came out again and took another report. They promised to do what they can to track the thieves. Hopefully, that will work out, but we're coming to the conclusion that this is going to be a daily frustration. Errr!

Alex, Pamela, Marcia, and Ray excavating their units.

Dave and Sarah Cleaning Their Unit

After we repaired the screens and restrung all the units we were finally able to get to work. It was another hot one today, so everyone was chugging the water and taking lots of shade breaks. Two more squares were opened today and we had a few more workers to get cracking on them. Ray and Marcia moved to this new location and it wasn't long before they were turning up more artifacts, notably a large quantity of nails. The cellars did not turn up today either, but Sarah and Dave found more midden that was chock full of artifacts including redware bowl sherds, copper banding, an iron strip, pipe stems and bowls, and animal bone. They also found a buckle.

The buckle in situ with redware sherds and brick.

Although we have not been successful in finding the cellars yet, we hope that the work tomorrow will shed more light on where we are located in relation to the work done in the 60's. That, of course, is our ultimate goal. We have three days left, so we all are feeling positive that this can be accomplished. In the meantime, we will be keeping our eyes open for those dastardly vandals.

August 17: Dig Day 1

Today was the official beginning of the dig. We arrived bright eyed and bushy tailed at 8am to discover that some local kids had vandalized the site overnight. We had mistakenly left some of our equipment behind, namely saws and machetes, and they used them to chop down some of our precious shade trees and destroy the plastic sheeting we use to cover the units. Then they ran off with our machetes. Needless to say, this was extremely angering. However, the Kingston police were notified and they will be driving by frequently after hours. Hopefully, this is the last we will hear of the vandals.

Our poor shade!

We had a good sized crew today. Most of us were regulars, but we had a couple of new faces this year too. Welcome to Leslie and Melanie! Six units were opened today with the hope of tracking down those cellars. Two of the units seem promising at this point since there is a lack of cultural material and rocks in the soil. But, we will see. Ray and Marcia seem to have come across more of the midden from last year, so they found the bulk of the artifacts today including nails, wine bottle glass, a pewter button, ceramics, pipe bowls and stems as well as animal bone. Sarah found a piece of Westerwald ceramic in her unit. Jonathan claims the prize for best artifact of the day with his possible spoon knop (end of the handle).

Excavating the units

Ray and Marcia's Midden (its there, trust me)

Jonthan's Spoon Knop

Of course we ended up on the hottest week of the summer. grabbed all our equipment and headed out to the site to clear brush and lay out this year's excavation units. This doesn't sound like a big deal, but it will probably be one of the toughest days we will have. The temperature was close to 90 degrees and the brush was this rare specie of man-eating blackberry cane. Although the site caretaker did a fantastic job of maintaining the area over the past year, it always works out that we need to clear a little more. Thankfully, Jonathan brought his chainsaw and we had enough people to pitch in to hack and rake. Kudos to Michael and Jesse for single-handedly picking up the massive bush and moving it to the other side of the property! Nature lost today's battle, but I think we will be feeling a little stiff tomorrow.

Before

Let's Kill This!

Shooting in the Squares

We've narrowed the cellar location down to two possible places. So, we are opening one 10 by 15ft. and two 5 by 10ft. areas with the hope of locating it. Hopefully we will have our questions answered this year.

The disappointing discovery we made was the extent of the damage done by the looting (reported earlier this year). They dug down to our previous level in the large grid square from last year. We are not sure if they stopped at our final level or if they went past. Someone also removed our datum, which was extremely frustrating but quickly remedied.

By the end of the work day, we had the entire area cleared and our grid squares were laid in. Tomorrow the fun truly begins!

After!

Rock Nook 2009: August 16-21st

One week from now, we will be back at Rocky Nook hard at work. Hopefully, we will locate that foundation this year. All of those tuned in to the blog this year, keep your fingers crossed for us. Its so close, I can almost taste it! I'm extremely excited to get back and see what we will discover.

This year we will have a great crew, with about 12-18 people volunteering every day. Of course, Derek and his crew from Virginia will be coming back to guide us through the adventure again.

The weather is looking about the same as every other year, with at least one stormy day looming in the forecast. Hopefully we will not be caught under a tree in the rain during lunch this year.

Like last year, I'll be updating the blog every evening with a description of the day along with photos and video (internet performance permitting, of course). There will not be an update on Friday due to a hectic schedule of meetings, the digger sail, and the Society dinner. I will try to post Friday's report ASAP after getting back to Ohio.

Please remember, you can post your comments/questions after each post. I'm looking forward to hearing from and seeing lots of you at the Meeting next week!

Reports of Site Looting

Over the past week some of our members went to the site to see how its holding up. Unfortunately, there were several signs that someone was pot hunting at the Joseph site. This type of activity has been going on at Rocky Nook for decades. It is a tremendous shame that we've been losing pieces of our history to selfish individuals looking for a knick-knack for their mantel or something to make a quick buck on eBay. Looting is crime, and not just because it vandalizes the property. It also robs us of the complete picture of the Howland sites and a better understanding of our nation's past.

First Round of Conservation Completed

Hi All,

After quite a lull in Rocky Nook news, I've got some fun pictures to hold you over till August. We just got some preliminary photos back of the first items sent to the conservator. Everything looks really amazing now, and should stay that way for quite some time. Most of it was taken up with backfilling all the units we opened up this year. That was hard and dirty work! It can be a little frustrating to fill everything back in after just one week, but everyone was happy to know that we answered several questions this year that have been on our list for some time. In the afternoon we were all rewarded with a relaxing sail on the shallop Elizabeth Tilley. It was a beautiful time. A big thank you to Tracy and her crew for taking us out!

Although we did not find the cellars that Deetz excavated in '68, we should be able to locate them next year. We now have a definite location of one of his grids that passed through a trash midden. Also, we may have discovered where his original datum might have been. We also found several interesting artifacts. Besides the spur and knife fragment, we uncovered a thimble, two beads, a straight pin, and a book clasp. Some of you may remember the nearly complete redware jug that Pamela and Alex found last year. Michael may have discovered more of it in the unit he was working on. There were also the usual ceramic sherds, pipe stems and bowls, window glass, and nails. All in all, it was a very satisfying year. I hope all of you enjoyed keeping up with our progress.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Rocky Nook project, especially through the next couple of weeks.<div were answered today. We finished excavating one of Deetz's test units. At the bottom was the rest of the Coca-cola bottle that we found yesterday, further convincing us that we had found one of the grids he opened in '68. The area that we opened yesterday, where the crew cleared all that brush, did not contain evidence of the cellars. So, we know where they are not located. However, nothing else was uncovered in those units either, indicating that we may have found where he had his datum (they would not have placed it where they would be excavating). Richard's unit definitely yielded the most artifacts this year. He had to use two hands to carry his bag by the end of the day. One of the items he recovered was a knife fragment that still had the hilt attached. Tomorrow we will do a little more digging, photographing, and mapping before we close up the excavation for the year.

Look Out! The internet connection was down until this afternoon due to the storm that passed through yesterday afternoon. Please scroll down to find out what happened.

We had a very productive day at Rocky Nook. Derek, Dave, Beth, and Jesse took another look at Deetz's map and decided that there might be a possibility that one of his datum points had been based off of the Joseph monument. So with machetes, clippers, and a chainsaw the group tackled more brush so new units could be opened up. Hopefully, within the next day or so we may find one of the cellars within those units. Ray who dug with Deetz as a child in 1968 came out to help today and it was great to have him on board. Meanwhile, two more units were put in near the area where the group worked four years ago with the hope they would yield more artifacts. Also, a quadrant was plotted out in the large block in order discover for certain whether or not we are looking at Deetz's old test units. After going down about a foot through the lighter, nearly artifact free soil the sterile sub-soil was reached. Sitting neatly on top of the sub-soil was a 1960's era Coca-Cola bottle fragment. This little bottle glass fragment definitivly answered the question of whether or not these were Deetz'z units. He thankfully left an "I was here" message for us in the bottom. We have been looking for an indication of Deetz's excavations for five years and we finally have one! So, tomorrow we will continue to explore the new units and most likely investigate some sections of the midden that were not excavated by Deetz in '68.

Day 3

Our progress so far
Dick, Alex, and Betty at the screen
Beth, Pamela, and Karen working in their units
Chris and the spur he found

Today we continued in the units we opened up yesterday. In the morning Chris, a new volunteer this year, uncovered a spur (Image 4). So far, it has been one of the most interesting finds of the year. Mother nature was working on our clock today and decided to send the rain storm during lunch. Some of us, however, had to eat in the downpour. The sun return just in time to start again and we were able to continue. By the end of the day is was becoming clear that the large area we opened up may be one of the areas that Deetz worked during the 1968 excavation. The artifact rich soil was broken up by 4 1/2 foot squares evenly spaced. So tomorrow we will do our best to clear up what this feature is.

Day 2

The group at work
Michael helps take unit elevations
Derek excavating in one of the units near the feature
Jonathan at the screen

Some artifacts from Richard's unit

Today we began the excavation. We opened up five units that surround the feature which was uncovered last year (Image 1) exposing an area of 225 sq. ft. By doing this, we hope to get a better understanding of what the feature is. At this point we have found that it extends in an irregular way, which is frustrating because we still can not yet tell what it is. It is possible that we have finally found where Deetz and his team excavated in the 1960's, or perhaps we have uncoverd an 18th century midden from a time after the Howland occupation, or maybe it is in fact something left behind from a building foundation. With regard to artifacts, we did not discover anything particularly noteworthy today. Richard displayed a typical selection of artifacts on his screen (Image 5 - wrought nails, window glass, ceramics, shell, animal bone, and pipe bowls and stems.) We hope to find something more diagnostic in the days ahead. While artifacts are exciting, the main priority is to figure out what the feature is. The investigation continues tomorrow. Stay tuned!

Day 1

We began work today out at Rocky Nook. Today's activities mostly involved removing some pretty mean thistles that had taken over in the past year, clearing brush from new areas to excavate (Image 4), and setting up the grid (Image 1). So, there are not many exciting things to report yet. However, we uncovered the feature (Image 2) which we found last year, and it has remained in pretty good shape (Image 3). Kudos to everyone today for working hard and braving the thorns. Typically, we find stems, but sometimes also bowl fragments and sometimes complete bowls! These pipes and fragments can be excellent diagnostic artifacts because style and form changed rather uniformly through time. For example, early pipes have very small bowls and later ones very large ones. Also the diameter of the bore in the stem for drawing the smoke from the bowl changes through time as well, becoming smaller and smaller. Earlier pipes were also shorter in length than the later ones.

Pipe smoking was introduced to England during the reign of Elizabeth I, but it did not become truly trendy until James I tried to ban it. It was not long until pipe smoking was fashionable among all classes, genders, and ages. It was clearly popular in the Howland household. Hundreds of fragments of various bowls and stems have been found on both the John and Joseph sites.

What do you see?

Here is our fantastic feature!
